MIT Nanomechanical Research Lab

Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA

1200sf

MIT’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering developed a state-of-the-art nanomechanical laboratory located on the “infinite corridor”, creating a visible presence in the historic Main Group complex of the campus. The primary requirements for this laboratory were acoustic and vibration isolation and close temperature control to allow the measurement of small forces on tested materials.

Design for Nano Lab included double-layers of windows to the corridor and to the exterior to improve acoustic isolation of the room. A suspended ceiling that steps up to meet the top of the new exterior windows isolates mechanical equipment.

Entry to the lab is through quiet anterooms serving as student and office space to isolate the experimental space from corridor noise.
